divine gate 2

Divine Gate

[action, fantasy, sci-fi]

Score: 4/10

Thoughts: EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE WATERBENDING ARMIN. Okay with that out of my sytem I have a few things to say here. I have only half a clue what is going on, but at the same time I am kind of intrigued. Honestly the only character introduced that I like is Aota (aka Armin). The only other character that catches my attention is knock-off Mikoto (K project); I looked it up and I think his name is Ginji, and I saw him in the opening. Speaking of the opening, it was underwhelming, as was the animation. I think the animation will pick up with the action but it was a little lame. Again, I am on the fence and don’t know what to think about this anime. As much as I want to like it, I  am having trouble with the mostly unlikable cast and the unknown plot.

Shouwa Ganroku Rakugo Shinjuu

[drama, josei]

Score: 8.5/10

Thoughts: Wow wow wow I don’t even know where to start. This series is quite sensational. To get anything bad out of the way first: the art is decent, but not amazing, and the sound track is pretty good, but not show stopping. Everything about this series is top notch. The characters are lively and human. Their relationships are real and explained very well. Yotaro has become one of my favorite characters of the season almost instantly. The other characters we have seen so far are also interesting, unique and relatable. The story is unique and they narrative type of storytelling is lovely. This show is built upon rich dialogue and character personality. It may seem a little boring if you want constant excitement and explosions and shit (OPM, SAO, etc.), but if you are looking for a unique, substantive, and rich series, this would be my top pick of the season thus far.

erased 2

[psychological, seinen, supernatural]

Score: 9/10

Thoughts: Finally something new that looks really great! This anime excited me in a multitude of ways, and I think if the series sticks to its distinct style, then it will be one of the better animes the year has to offer. Easy things out of the way first: the animation is simple but well executed and effective in getting the point across. The music is really nice and carries a good constant tone throughout the episode. I love the premise and think it is probably the most interesting one this season. The storyline feels very unpredictable and really keeps you on the edge of you seat! The narrative is also calming and well done.  The the main character is very likable. His character type is not very typical: it pulls from various existing types such as the shut in and the quite distant guy to create a unique protagonist. I have been watching out for this anime for about 6 months and I am glad I did. this is a masterpiece in the making and I hope it lives up to its potential.

sekkou boys 2

Sekkou Boys

[comedy, music]

Score: 5/10

Thoughts: What the hell did I just watch? This show is so ridiculous and I can’t get over it. What the hell is even happening? Despite the pretty bad animation and music, the main girl is already quite likable. I think it would be more fair to judge this anime as a idol group parody because in essence that is what this show it. It is horrible, yet also very entertaining. I think I will stick with this anime simply because it is super unique and pretty funny thus far. Overall, I would not recommend to everyone, but if you like to be stuck in between hating and loving the series, this is the one for you.

dagashi kashi 2

Dagashi Kashi

[slice of life, comedy]

Score: 5/10

Thoughts: Honestly I have no idea how I feel about this anime. The whole things is really bizarre. The first episode introduced all the characters and the premise of the show. I like that characters so far, but they have a really weird and hard to understand dynamic. The background art is not that great and the animation is meh. I like the opening, but it isn’t all that great, and the ending is also not very good. I like this anime for comedy purposes, but so far it has just left me confused. Overall I enjoyed the episode, but I want this anime to improve more in technical areas.

assassclass 2

Assassination Classroom Second Season

[action, comedy, school, shounen]

Score: 9/10

Thoughts: Oh how I missed this show. It’s great, especially for binge watchers, that the series picked up exactly where it left off. Excellent episode construction this premier. We started with a bang and got to see Irina develop more. Although this episode basically functioned as a reminder of the characters and their norms, it was executed very well and brought the series to the forefront to my attention. I love the new opening and I’m glad they stuck with another calming ending. The animation is the same, well done animation from the last series. We didn’t get to see a lot of it this episode, but I’m certain we have some epic-ness on the way. I really hope this series gets 25 or 22 episodes this season. Overall, I would say that Assassination Classroom came back in full swing!

Norn9: Norn + Nonet

[adventure, fantasy, romance]

Score: 4/10

Thoughts: I’ll start by saying that the best thing about this anime is its great potential. I think with some development that this anime can get really good. Sadly, now is not that time and I don’t have too many nice things to say. Honestly, this anime lacks omph. Watching it I wasn’t really amazed or interested in anything. The characters are one-note and the art is a nice pallet, but not amazingly executed. I like that the series opted for a calm opening, as it works well with the setting. The premise is easily the best part of this anime, and if the story goes off into wacky land this anime will fall apart accordingly. Overall the episode was not bad, just not memorable in the slightest. This is a series that I will probably forget about once I finish it.

stwkm 2

Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu

[slice of life, school]

Score: 7/10

Thoughts: Finally! Protagonist I really like this season! Buntarou is a stand up guy, he was introduced well, and we even got to see the premise of his thoughts. I also really like his friend Yuuka and his other friend Atomu. Kurd was a little weird at first, but her strange character is still quite enjoyable. I also like that I am getting some Mothly Girls’ Nozaki-kun feels from this anime. Also I have a bit of low-key hype for the sadist-looking cute boy (Sogo Okita?) that we got a glimpse of in the opening. The animation is pretty average, and the color pallet is pretty well rounded. I wish the openings and endings were better, because they are pretty stale at this point. Overall, I think this is going to shape up to be a pretty good series and I am excited for what is to come!

active raid 2

Active Raid

[mecha, sci-fi, police]

Score: 4.5/10

Thoughts: Before this aired people where hyping this series because it is fundamentally similar to Code Geass. I would disagree. Now allow me to explain: let’s start with positives. The animation is pretty good. The CGI are fairly detailed and they mesh well with backgrounds and drawn characters. The op is meh, and I didn’t catch the ending. One good thing is that the sound track gets somewhat jazzy at times, and even reminds me of Baccano a little. The premise of the anime is also fairly unique. That is about the only good I can say about this series at the moment. Moving on to the not so great parts, the characters are the worst part of the anime at this point in time. In my opinion, the characters are not cast very well, and the dialogue is so so. The main girl is not likable in the slightest and the main guy (with the scar) sounds like a justice loving high school boy. Seriously, if you closed you eyes you might mistake this anime for a supernatural harem anime or something. On top of that, the first episode left us with close to zero information about what this series is going to be about.

haruchika 2

[music, slice of life, school, romance]

Score: 7/10

Thoughts: I came in with fairly low expectations for this anime and Iw as pretty much blown away at how promising this looks. In one episode, the series successfully drew up the background, call to action, and conflict. So far this by far takes the spot of my favorite of the season (granted it is too early to tell). The plot is nothing amazing or unique, but the characters make up for it in every way. The cast is colorful so far and I can’t wait to meet more and more. This may just be a side note but the whole time I kept thinking “I would actually be eager to watch this anime if it was about Chika and volleyball”. On a relevant note, the animation is pretty weird and somewhat creepy to be honest, but I think it fits the series fine.

phantom world

Musaigen no Phantom World

[action, fantasy, supernatural]

Score: 6.5/10

Thoughts: First I have to say that the visual is stunning. Lots of rich colors and very nice fluid animation. Other than that this anime is not very notable. The opening and ending are fine, not bad, but not very good either. The premise is not very different, but so far it has been presented in a very enjoyable and rather unique way. I especially liked how the little sequence in the beginning gave us a pretty good idea of what happened and where the anime is going. The characters are not ones that I haven seen before, but the categorization helps to differentiate the series from the usual harem-esk anime. I also have to take a moment to appreciate that the series did attempt to steer clear of the biggest cliches.  Overall I like it and I think this is one to watch. It has potential and I hope the series reaches that.

price of stride 2

Prince Of Stride

[sports, action]

Score: 6/10

Thoughts: Very nice unique visual. I didn’t quite like it at first but it really grew on me. Action scenes are pretty great and the saturated backgrounds are quite nice. The opening is meh. and I didn’t hear the ending. This is by no means the best sports anime I have watched, but I really hope it will get better. The story is a pretty typical one for a sports anime. Maybe I dyed this too much. the episode was very rushed and the introduction of the characters fell to the back burner. On the other hand, I did like what I saw of the characters introduced. So far my favorite is the quirky bland-looking guy, and Armin (runner version). Sadly, nothing else much was more than mentioned in terms of character background. A plus for this anime would be that is is pretty funny. Overall this was an underwhelming premier, and I can no longer see this series being amazing and dazzling, for it is just too cliche.

Well I hope you enjoyed my blog and Part 2 is coming soon!
